Day 02 KOLKATA Morning is at leisure Kolkata is a city of glaring contrasts: a curious blend of the old and the new, partly feudal, partly born out of growing urbanization, partly un-definable. It is a medley of the east and the west, a graft of a European city imposed on the Asian scape that gives Calcutta its bewildering charm, confusion and excitement. Being just about 300 years old, Calcutta hardly has many great historical monuments. Perhaps, the oldest remembered is the site where the Kalighat Temple now stands. Today Calcutta is the largest city in India with a population over 10 million and boasts of India's first ever Metro rail system. It is a city that shocks on first impression but eventually the visitor falls in love with it. The sightseeing of the city includes a visit to the Victoria Memorial, Calcutta's most imposing and monumental dream in marble opened by the Prince of Wales in 1921 and often called the "Taj" of the British Raj, St. Paul's Cathedral and the Indian Museum, the largest in India, with one of the best collections of Indian art. JORHAT Check in at Thenegal Manor House for two nights JORHAT or JOREHAUT means two hats or mandis- Macharhat and Chowkihat which existed on the two different banks of the river Bhogdoi during the 18th Century; Jorhat was the last capital of the Ahom Kingdom. In the year 1794 the Ahom king Gaurinath shifted the capital from Sibsagar (erst-while Rangpur ) to Jorhat. This town was a flourishing and commercial metropolis but completely destroyed after a series of the Burmese invasions since 1817 till the arrival of the British force in the year 1824 under the Stewardship of David Scott and Captain Richard. KOHIMA Kohima is located on National Highway No.39, less than three hours drive from Dimapur. Kohima is a picturesque hill station perched at an altitude of 1,495 metres above sea level. The Japanese beat a retreat from Kohima during the Second World War, and the War Cemetery is a symbolic memorial raised to commemorate the supreme sacrifices made by the officers. The Catholic Cathedral at Aradura Hill is an important landmark, as it happens to be one of the largest cathedrals in the entire north-east and houses the biggest cross in the country, made of wood. Day 11 KOHIMA -
KAZIRANGA North-east of Guwahati, on the banks of
the Brahmaputra River, is the Kaziranga National Park, famous as the
last major home of Rhinoceros unicorns. The 430-sq-km park is thought
to have a rhino population approaching 1000, although in 1904 they
were on the verge of extinction. The park became a game sanctuary in
1926 and by 1966 the numbers have risen to about 400. The park also
has wild gaur (buffalo) deer, elephants, tigers, bears and many water
bird species including pelicans, which breed here. One of the standard
ways of observing the wildlife is from elephant back. Day 12 KAZIRANGA
